Hey there,
Getting a new smallmouth rod--leaning toward scott @ 4pc. 7wt. with 8wt. SA bss bug line also considering the new Sage smallmouth rod---any thoughts? I don't have a fly shop in my area (except Orvis) to ask advice/test cast any rods thanks!

My wife and I fish for smallmouth primarily in the Rappahannock and its tributaries. We use Orvis rods exclusively, although I plan to get Harry's 8weight Scott Bass rod as a retirement present for myself in a few years. I use an Orvis Clearwater 5 weight tip-flex(9.5), 9', with 6 weight bass bug and 6 weight Orvis mini-sink tip line. My wife uses a 6weight Orvis Clearwater mid-flex with the same line as I use. When the water is high and when I fish at Kelly's Ford or farther downstream, I use an Orvis 9' Tls tip-flex (9.5) 6 weight with 7wt line. These rods are teriffic for us, although if you are an expert you might be able to justify more expensive rods. The 5-weight landed about 2 dozen smallmouth over 16" this year, including two over 22" with ease. The six weight mid-flex (9'), is especially easy to cast all day long, although it takes patience and practice when using heavily weighted size 4 and 6 flies. Harry sells all of these rods. johnzett
